I have come upon some writer's block lately. This has been difficult for me, because I have never struggled to come up with a topic or an article idea. But this week's article has been a challenge. It could be that I am preoccupied with enjoying my two little kids. My wife and I recently had our second child. This has left less time for the blog, but more time with the family.

I have been having a blast with my eldest daughter and have really enjoyed meeting my youngest daughter. I believe my writer's block can be attributed to this time of adjustment and enjoying my new family. However, I make it a goal to publish one article a week.

Therefore, no more procrastination is allowed! It's time to write!

Three years ago, I had just published two articles in the span of three days. I published an introductory article and two days later, I published an article about Amazon Prime Day. That's how I kicked off my blog.

Oddly enough, as I am looking back on three years of blogging, today just happens to be Amazon Prime Day once again. What does this mean?

  • According to Amazon: "An epic day (and a half) of our best deals."
  • The catch: You must be a Prime Member to enjoy the deals.

Amazon is offering a 30-day trial for anyone interested in the deals that Amazon offers. You can sign up for a free 30-day trial by clicking on the link below. It is an affiliate link and Summit of Coin will receive a commission from anyone that signs up.

I actually have never been interested in checking out the deals that Amazon offers, because I really don't want to spend a boatload of money on something that I wasn't planning on buying. That's the danger of a sale, it gets you to impulse buy, because you believe that you are getting a deal.

This is true, you are getting a deal, but the impulse to save money does not allow you to think about the purchase. You see the item and sale. You believe that it is such a good deal that it can't be passed up and then you buy.

I like to treat Amazon Prime Day just like Black Friday! On Black Friday, I avoid the stores and enjoy a little bit of nature and a lot of football. I like to treat Amazon Prime Day the same. Back in 2015, I called for a day of not buying anything! If it was good enough for 2015, why not 2018! Therefore, I challenge you to avoid the deals and save your money on Prime Day!

That's a long enough rant on Prime Day, let's dig into some of my thoughts as my little website turns 3 today!

Thought Number 1: Blogging is not easy!

This goes with everything in this world. There are plenty of really successful blogs out there. They all have great resources about how to build a successful blog that makes money. I will echo statements I have heard from multiple bloggers, "It takes a lot of work!" You can't expect to become an overnight sensation. You have to work and market your website and it's brand.

I don't spend enough time on my website to make it profitable. Maybe someday in the future I can, but until then I will continue providing lots of financial content that will hopefully help you!

Thought Number 2: Blogging has helped my own personal finances!

Maybe this makes sense to everybody, but something I really didn't think about before starting this website. Before we make a purchase and as we discuss things throughout the month, I think about posting our spending for my readers. It makes me pause one extra time before I say: "Let's do it."

We are holding each other accountable, but this outlet is one extra piece of to being held accountable.

Thought Number 3: Blogging has helped me learn even more about finances!

Once again, this may make sense, but as I dig into a topic, I find out stuff that I didn't know! Specifically, my articles on the different types of investments. By digging into the tax code, I learned a lot.

I guess, if you want to be good at something, blog about it! You will have to learn about it to write about it! It's the same concept of doing to learn. When you do something, you have to learn about it!

In Conclusion

Essentially, I wrote about blogging and Amazon Prime Day! Try to avoid spending loads of money today and tomorrow. I warned you: Sales are there to trick you into impulse buying. Just because the item is on sale, it doesn't mean that you need the item.

To end this article, I would like to share a quote from one of my favorite football coaches. The great Tom Osborne was an icon of my childhood and I idolized him. Still today, I find his life and story to be amazing (I may have just come up with a future article idea?).

"The odds are always against you no matter what your previous history is. You have to overcome the tendency to relax." - Tom Osborne, former Nebraska Cornhusker Head Football Coach

This quote is a great reminder of the importance of hard work. In this life, nothing is ever easy and you can't expect things handed to you on a gold platter. If you want something, you have to go out and get it!

Thank you for reading and I thank each and everyone of you for following our journey these past three years. I am excited to keep providing my weekly article and sharing more financial knowledge to you!
